Of Reused and Renewed
What is consumed more than one billion times a day in more than 200 countries & territories around the world? PepsiCo products! And just recently, PepsiCo, Inc. announced that LIFEWTR®, their premium water line, will be packaged in 100% rPET (recycled polyethylene terephthalate), and bubly ™, their popular sparkling water line, will no longer be available in plastic. These two initiatives are slated to be accomplished by next year, and are expected to eliminate over 8,000 metric tons of virgin plastic and about 11,000 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions. Also, by using rPET bottles, less energy will be used to produce the bottles. Ultimately, by 2025, PepsiCo’s goal is to make 100% of their packaging recyclable, compostable, or biodegradable, and to use 25% recycled plastic content in all of its plastic packaging. Kudos to PepsiCo for advancing towards a circular economy in plastics!
The Struggle Is Real
Healthy Lunches at Work
The American Heart Association and Aramark have a joint initiative known as Healthy for Life® 20 By 20, and they recently initiated a survey to better understand how folks eat at work. Over 1,000 people were surveyed, and the data shows that Americans want healthier food options at work but find information, availability, and affordability are key inhibitors to this actually happening. This has a domino effect, since over 75% of people said their decisions at lunch impacted their food decisions at other times of the day. The survey continued to solidify that health & wellness is top of mind, and even if consumers might not make a healthy choice, they still wanted healthy choices to be available. To support, Aramark launched a plant-forward initiative on menus, which resulted in a 15% average reduction in calories, saturated fat, and sodium, while increasing fruits, veggies, and whole grains. It’s great to hear Aramark is working to provide healthy options to energize and inspire.
