Sweet or Savory
Have You Had Your Breakfast Yet?
A surprising new poll of 2,000 Americans found that on average, breakfast is eaten only 3x a week, and 13% of folks don’t even eat breakfast. OnePoll, in partnership with Sabra, examined overall eating habits and behaviors in this study which showed that of those who eat breakfast, 65% favored eggs, 58% drink coffee, and 56% eat cereal. An interesting find is that the ‘sweet breakfast eater’ tends to be an early riser and experiences an energy crash around 2 p.m., while the ‘savory breakfast eater’ was most productive later in the day (11 a.m.) and had an afternoon crash around 3 p.m. Why are folks skipping breakfast? Mealtimes are changing into snack times, with 75% of folks saying they snack in the morning. There’s also a shift towards a bigger interest in breakfast foods that are healthy, high in protein, have fruit, and are low in sugar. Well that’s egg-tastic if you ask me!
Are You The New Superfruit?
Sea Buckthorn
Now moving onto sweet & tart – meet sea buckthorn, which is a shrub that contains berries that are a cross between a strawberry and cranberry. This super berry is slated to be the next big Superfruit and is showing up on Michelin-star menus and in CPG (consumer packaged goods) products. I had to google it just to see what all the berries was about! Since functional is on-trend, it makes sense that sea buckthorns would create a bit of a buzz considering these berries have multiple health benefits; they have antioxidants, fatty acids, Vitamins C & E, and are used as natural remedies for arthritis, sunburn, diabetes, and inflammation. Although you’re not fashionable just yet, sea buckthorns, I have my eyes on you!
